Huzzah!

[personal profile] ariakas 2015-06-08 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
So on the "answer questions" thread the other day somebody asked me why I left science for the arts and I mentioned I might not have, quite yet, depending on a job offer.

Well, that job offer was just made today, I accepted, and barring imminent disaster in the interim as of this fall I will be Lieutenant Ariakas (Bio-Science Officer for the Canadian Armed Forces).

What awesome news have you guys had lately?

Fucking noice, congrats.

Uniform service five. Sounds like a really niche role, what will your general be dealing with or is that all secret squirrel?

It's so niche there were two openings for it in the whole country this year. I wonder who the other lady/gent is, but I'll see them in Basic this fall.

Thanks! And I won't even know myself until this spring after I've cleared Basic and officer school, that's how secret it is ;p

Vetting should be pretty fun given the whole living abroad for years thing. For that kind of level your interview is going to be fun (in a dark way I really look foward to getting DV STRAP vetted).

Oh I already had my interview (which was about five hours long between everything) and the vetting process is finished. It only took almost two years, too!

Kick ass, Lt.! That is fantastic.

The only good news I got is a hint on a side gig that should bring in some serious money.

Side gigs are sweet. My side gig has been very, very lucrative for the past year and a half or so, but alas I'll have to give that up when I go do my duty for the Queen.

Thanks! This is much closer to what I saw myself doing most of my life than translating porn ;p

Although, who knows, I might miss it.

Congrats to you! That sounds pretty impressive.

Not so much my own awesome news, but my mom and I signed my dad for a bunch of radio contests and he won meet and greet with one of his favorite bands, so that's pretty cool for him.

Thanks! That is super cool. I never win contests ;_; the last random chance-related thing I won was a cake walk in elementary school, I think.

My family and I are pretty lucky. I win books on goodreads pretty often and we usually win 2-3 concerts a year from the radio station.

Then again, we also enter a lot of things. (Somehow this luck hasn't applied to lottery tickets)

! missed that this was also an opportunity to talk about everyones favourite topic (themselves).

Both myself and my mate are going CID. For a dozen people there were four possible departments.

We were the only two people to get posted to the best (most challenging and serious) two departments. This means if we put in the work we could both be trainee detectives within six months. Pretty damn psyched.

That's awesome. Congrats on that; I feel like a real grownup now starting on a real career, not the endless limbo of academia and publishing.

I said it before, but I'll say it again. I'm so proud of you for being so awesome.

Woo for you! Super curious about a bio-science officer does... I know band members who have to do basic every year - will you?

For me, I went into an interview and left with a verbal contract. Totally unexpected, and totally awesome.

Tests and develops safety protocols, equipment, etc. And not so far as I know, no.

That's pretty awesome. Can I ask you what level you applied at? It took me over a year just to get an interview, and about six months to hear back from them afterward. Eight months to a year seems pretty typical for the other officer candidates I've spoken to, as well, but friends who went enlisted have told me they were pretty much hired on the spot.

Grats that's so exciting!

Nothing much just looking forward to going on a break for the next few weeks.

Thanks! I'll probably quit my current job a bit early so I've got time to loaf around before I ship out, myself.
