That's a silly argument, though. Japanese-style cosplay was developed in Japan. That's like saying hot curries aren't Indian or marinara isn't Italian because chilies and tomatoes both came from the Americas.

Is there a notable difference between japanese and non-japananese cosplay though?

Most japanese cosplay look good. Most non-japanese cosplay look like shit.

that's only because it's shooped to hell and back

Most Japanese people cosplay from Japanese media? Not all, mind, but that's a big part. And cosplay "culture" is different. I say this having been to several conventions in Tokyo, such as Comiket and Tokyo Game Show. It has a much more professional feel, where people use aliases and hand out business cards, and pretty much dress up purely for the sake of modeling a costume. Cosplayers are corralled into one area and you aren't really just supposed to "hang out" in your costume. Also in my experience, most Japanese cosplayers buy their costumes and buy pre-styled wigs, too, at the many cosplay wig shops in Ikebukuro or wherever, so most (not all but most) of them are not so laid back about cosplaying, it feels a lot more serious. (it's not BETTER, and "professional" photos will be severely shopped, too, but it has a stricter atmosphere about it)
