I was going to say he looks soaked, not like he hasn't washed his hair in a week.

Wrestling has to work up a sweat too. You should probably expect a lot of sweat during these matches, lol.

They purposely wet their hair before matches, as well. I think it might be for aesthic reasons? (Like seeing the spray of water helps sell the moves?)

Hmm, maybe! I guess wet hair being throw back would be more dramatic, and if you have frizzy hair then wetting it might make you look more severe.

Also a lot of the guys' hair frizz up when they wrestle (looking at you, Ziggler) so it helps to maintain it a little bit better.

And now I want fic where they discuss their frizzy hair and what they do to prevent it.

:D :D :D

But then I found the canon source and it is almost better (except the not-bonding part):
"Staying moist in the ring is a team effort. On the topic of hair and personal hygiene, professional wrestlers are well-known for having wet hair when they come to the ring ... and in some cases, being dripping wet in general. The three members of The Shield were among the moister members of the WWE roster, so I asked Reigns about what exactly happens before they come out to make them so wet. It's not a moment for bonding, apparently.

"We're all together, but I'm not wetting anybody else's ... Seth [Rollins] is not wetting our hair for us. We just take water bottles up there [to our entrance position in the crowd]. A lot of times we go up there with what we call a Headset Brother. Actually, lately it's been a Headset Sister. She or he has the lowdown on when it's time to go out, but yeah we bring water bottles. You already have all that leave-in conditioner in. When it's time, you wet it up and go."

Bo Dallas is the moistest of the moist. No member of the WWE roster is more wet than Bo Dallas. "Oh, man," says Reigns, laughing. "Bo ... I really hope this becomes a thing and he takes all the heat off [The Shield members] for being wet. He is ... it's ridiculous how wet he gets. He wears a merch shirt. It looks like he's got one of those surf shirts on, like he's at a water park or something. It's ridiculous. I think me and Seth would be the second-wettest.

"We have have had a discussion, a group of us, talking about who's the wettest. I said, 'I usually bring, I dunno, a couple water bottles.' And [Bo] was like, 'Bro, try five.' He dumps five water bottles on his head before he goes out there.""

Why is he mentioning specifically that "Seth [Rollins] is not wetting our hair for us" though? Way to make me suspicious!

I'm so glad I wasn't the only person who read all that and went "That's interesting...but why go out of your way to say SPECIFICALLY Seth isn't doing it? Roman, that's just intriguingly odd."

Haha, a former writer for WWE actually mentioned it for Rusev.

http://kevineckwrestling.sportsblog.com/posts/2391983/i-m-always-right--except-when-i-m-wrong--what-my-initial-thoughts-were-on-tensai-and-rusev.html

"When the creative team was shown clips of Rusev matches and promos from NXT so that we could start working on ideas for him when he was called up to the main roster, I and several other members of the team burst out laughing.

With his loincloth-type ring attire, over-the-top facial expressions, wild hair and primal screams, the guy was unintentionally hilarious. This was a heel character straight out of the 1970's that would never work today, I thought.

...

It turned out that some people above my pay grade saw some of the same flaws with Rusev's presentation that I and others on the creative team did. Before Rusev made his WWE debut, his ring attire was changed and he was instructed to tone down the facial expressions and screaming and to wet his hair so that it didn't look look so wild."

I've also read it gets REALLY hot under the lights and stuff, and wrestlers try to keep a little bit cool that way. I don't like the wet-hair look, but it does make it oddly satisfying when the match goes on a while and their hair gets increasingly floofy (Seth ends up looking like a rumpled cat, I love it).

[personal profile] ayumidah 2015-06-10 05:26 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that makes sense.

No one's hair will ever outdo Ziggler's. It's been awhile since I've really noticed it (Distracted by the roots maybe) but mah gawd it used to be hilarious to watch.
