It's not so much a problem of context in that way, because I do think they're very pretty. I just don't know how to do so in a way that doesn't make me feel guilty and creepy and like a jackass.

I think it might have something to do with how fucking awful the commentary and the culture around it are. Like... in some ways, it's really easy to sexualize women's sports, and that's the problem. Because most of the examples of doing so that are out there are pretty awful and objectifying. You don't want to be the dude who only cares about women's sports because he thinks the women are hot, because that dude's a shithead. You don't want to be the guy saying that they should wear tighter shirts, or the guy who thinks the Lingerie Football League is a good idea, or whatever.

I really, really don't want to be that kind of person. I like women's sports and I think they should be taken seriously, on their own merits, and so you try to cultivate the habits of mind that go along with that, and it's hard to balance that. And also I'm just paranoid about being a creep. Like, it's kind of the same thing, whenever I'm getting into a woman musician, I worry about whether or not it's just because I think she's pretty - and so to avoid doing that, the response is to just refuse to acknowledge her looks at all. And it's a really frustrating way to think, I guess.
