was anyone NOT happy (or at least neutral) when she shot him? he was kind of an asshole even aside from the sexism thing. he was also kind of boring imo and not a very compelling antagonist, so I'm not sorry to see him go

Yeah...of all the bosses, Maroni was the least compelling... Falcone had moments that suggest he might not be an entirely horrible person (at least up until he strangled Liza), and Penguin and Fish are at least clever. Maroni was just...the least complex possible mob boss possible. And getting in Fish's face at the end, there was just...idiotic. He got what he deserved, and the resulting changes in Two-Face's origin, if the show ever gets to that point, can only be a narrative improvement, to boot.

He was painted as an idiot from the start. Even Harvey was like like, "Malroni is taking over? That hot head?"

His whole entire storyline was leading up to someone shooting him. I would have guessed Cobblepot or Falcone. But I'll take Fish in a pinch.
