There's a difference between not caring if somebody dies and thinking they deserve to die. Not that I agree at all with OP's opinion, but you were totally reading things that weren't said, which does deserve notice.

If you didn't say X and someone accuses you of saying X, how is stating "But I didn't say X" a shitty defense? I mean... how is it a defense at all, isn't it just clarifying a misunderstanding? (And perhaps a deliberate one?)

It's a shitty defense because even if they're not saying he deserved to die, it's still pretty much bullshit to say that you don't care about a dude getting into a horrible car crash because you think he was a dick sometimes.
