And especially when the actors are often contractually obligated to do those promotional interviews. They don't have a choice about going to the interview, but I think RDJ was absolutely within his rights to walk out of an interview that was not about the movie he was promoting.

This. OP is acting like RDJ is the director/producer of the movie vs just one of many actors under contract. And I highly doubt that complete forfeiture of personal privacy was included in whatever papers he signed.

He's famous. For a WHOLE lot of people, that's enough to say that he did, in fact, forfeit any privacy or boundaries.

That doesn't mean it's right though. Or that he should be judged by people like OP for what he did.

Oh, I agree with you...just bitching a bit about an argument I've gotten into a lot. (And the related 'they're famous, so anything they do is only for the publicity'.)

Ah, gotcha.

But yeah, it actually makes me kind of happy when I go onto an IMDB/wiki page of an actor I like and it has almost no personal information about them. Or like actresses with unknown birthdays.

People can say that, but that doesn't make them correct.

That's an attitude that I absolutely hate. It's incredibly dehumanizing (and it also seems like a lot of people who think that way are almost...resentful of the fact that some people are famous. There's this really weird angry streak in the way they present it).

Steve Martin wrote a piece about this phenomenon for The New Yorker, "Paparazzi of Plato": http://www.geocities.ws/s00keyjane/plato.html

I doubt someone of RDJ's status can be roped into doing promotional tours if he doesn't want to, though. The rest of the cast, maybe. But RDJ? Nah.

Uh, you have no idea how contracts works do you?

(Anonymous) 2015-06-10 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
I understand that there are a lot of negotiable parts to one and someone like RDJ almost certainly has a shit hot agent to negotiate hard on his behalf. Acting like he's some helpless n00b actor who has no choices just doesn't fit with reality.

He's still under contract. He might be the biggest name in the franchise, but that doesn't mean he's not under contract. Promo/ramping up anticipation and hype is a huge part of making big budget action movies - no way is a company going to let its biggest star out of doing the promo route. You might be able to negotiate how much promo you do/where you go to a certain degree, but some promo is going to be non-negotiable.

Plus, Marvel and the Iron Man franchise are what made him as big as he is now - he was well known and liked before, maybe even A-list at various times, but Iron Man made him an action movie star and a household name. And they took a chance on him too - read up on how the director of Iron Man convinced Marvel to hire RDJ, and the contract/insurance shenanigans therein, then comeback and try to say that RDJ can negotiate away his contractual obligations.
