Sorry, you're stressed right now, but I want a house so bad.

Freedom to do whatever I want to it, my "monthly payment to have a roof over my head" doesn't just disappear into the ether, and in 15 to 30 years, I'll OWN something. The couple thousand a year for property taxes will pale to the upwards of $12,000 a year in rent. And sure, I'll have to buy my own garbage disposal or water heater when they break...but that's not an annual thing, and then those things are mine, too. (Also, no more sharing walls, but I admit if I rented a house instead of an apartment, that would be a moot point.)

THIS SO MUCH!!

It starts out so stressful, but eventually, owning your own place to call home will pay off (not just financially but emotionally and mentally as well).

I want to buy a house so much, but it just seems to be more and more difficult as time goes on. First I wasn't making enough money, couldn't even SAVE money, but now that I am saving money the area where I live, the housing market has become insanely competitive and expensive. T~T FML

This is exactly why I bought property. I already hate that I wasted so goddamned much of my money on rent already. That's cash I could have been putting toward something I actually own, you know?

But I wanna own something in the long run, because it will be mine, and the equity all mine too. I want a mailbox that's mine. Miiiiiiine. Maybe even just a condo to start. I'm more stressed about eternally saving for that down payment :(

Oof don't get a condo they are not worth it because of stupid councils that decide what you can do on your own property.

We looked into it and it was some grade A bullshit so we just waited until we could afford a down payment for a real house.

Ugh yes, condo councils are like empowered versions of neighbourhood committees that mandate what you can't (and must) do in an uppity neighbourhood. My big sis and her SO are currently renting one, so while they don't have to deal directly with them, there are still rules that must be followed else the property owners descend for things like speaking above a whisper past 9pm.

It's the waiting that's getting to me though. I don't have the bonus of dual income for the forseeable future, so I'll be looking for a place to buy on my own. So it's the "own sooner" vs "rent for a long time, and then own" that I'm weighing.

Or I could totally get a mobile home tomorrow and deal with mobile lot alderman. What an adventure \:D/

Yeah I feel that pain. Plus the problem with a mobile home is trying to sell the damn thing later. You're stuck forever, practically.

The only good option is to save up for a house, but I can understand how that would be prohibitively expensive on a single salary.

I feel you, anon, but...I still want one. I want to be able to do whatever I want to my property without first having to ask permission. I want to be able to have goats. And chickens. And plant elderberry bushes and have a ridiculous garden and maybe a beehive.

As a Navy brat growing up, you have me at the moving part. It's pretty much the reason why I don't collect anything and I try to keep everything I own at a minimum. If I can fit everything in a couple of duffles, I am happy.

Re: Some free advice

Yes, this, but if you do it intelligently, the pain is short-term and the gain is long-term. E.g., buy cheap/foreclosed, fix up what needs fixing as you go/have the cash for it, and organize your stuff AS YOU UNPACK IT. Can't stress that last one enough. Also! Leave no box unpacked. Even if you pack it right back up again and send it off to Goodwill.

Moving sucks but it's totally worth it the first time you can just put a hook in a wall or fix a door without being forced to jump through hoops!

(Congrats tho anon! Tell us about your house?!)

Aww, I'm sorry. I was so paranoid, buying our house, i told *no one* until we had the keys and were actually moving in.

I...actually like moving. You get to sort your stuff, toss or donate the junk you don't need, organize, and clean everything, so when you move into your new, clean house, you can put your old, loved, clean and organized stuff away in new places and it's all good!

I hope you find your zen.
*sends calming vibes*
