Guilt from reading RPF isn’t what keeps me up at night. But when I read some good stuff, it reminds me that I really want original fiction about (sympathetic) characters who are famous that’s at least as good.
No direct expys of particular RL celebrities, though references are ok. Not fictionalised biographies. And please not RPF with the serial numbers filed off.
I just wonder why there’s nothing fun in the style of RPF...that isn’t RPF.

This confuses me. You want...fic about celebrities, but not *directly* about celebrities? Is that what i'm reading?

So you basically want to read about 'hollywood' types who aren't real, or, in other words....fiction?

*is confused*

Yes, that's a much more concise way of putting it.

But all the fiction about famous characters I've seen is tends to be...sleazier than the kind of fanfic I like. And regardless of sleaze level I'm not into scandals and other soap opera plots. Unless they're played for laughs, maybe.

Huh, okay. I guess not the kind of stuff I really read, though 'Princess Daisy' keeps popping into my head. You might enjoy that.

Maybe try Jackie Collins novels, that's pretty close to what you're looking for I think?

Thanks, I just looked them up, but they're not what I go for.

Write it yourself dogg. Could be the next market inefficiency.

...you don't think that original works about fictional celebrities exist?

Whether or not they're any good I couldn't tell you, but it's one of the most popular tropes, especially in YA or romance.

From what I've seen so far those aren't what I was aiming for, as I mentioned upthread, but I appreciate you taking the time to link!

Well, I'm not sure exactly what you find "sleazy" about the majority of those links, but the point is that those links were the result of three minutes searching one fiction site.

The genre you're searching for is a massive and popular one. Whether or not any of it's to your specific taste doesn't negate the fact that it exists in copious amounts and a little actual research on your part might go a long way.

I don't have any recs but I feel like there has to be something that fits your description. I see that an anon above has already linked some things...maybe ask in GC?

Have you tried published works?

(Anonymous) 2015-06-11 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
I used to devour Harlequin and Silhouette romances and there were a fair few like this. Off the top of my head there's this series: http://www.goodreads.com/series/61010-hollywood-dynasty

Also, what about actor AUs for fandoms you aren't in?

Isn't there? I think I have read stuff in that genre. It may be decades old, but I think it exists.

I have a feeling part of the draw of RPF fic is that it's RPF, rather than the subject matter or how it's written, and you're going to find it hard to get the same buzz from anything else if RPF is your thing, no matter how much you wish it were otherwise.
