Yes, this might have to do a ton with nostalgia goggles, and I do love the Prime games, but Super Metroid was perfectest for its isolated atmosphere. You have things like the already tense background music dropping off just to up tension in a tiny room ("Hm. I think I'm just going to go back the way I—god damn you, grey door"), detailed creepy ass pixel art and animation like Mother Brain and even tilesets (and those chozos. i remember reading the nintendo power comic first, so i was so confused and terrified by a dangerous and screaming one), and the layout of rooms. It's just such a perfect game.
I also have a fondness for Fusion's SA-X scaring more bajeezus' out of me.
