I finally had to defriend someone like that. Every post seemed to be about how awful life was due to money (intermixed with the ocassional "Just had to buy this to make myself feel better"), and every suggestion was met with excuses for why it wouldn't work. And after a few rounds of "we're too proud and/or picky to accept help" I couldn't take it anymore.

I felt a little bitchy cutting someone out, without notice or explanation, when they were down, but I also had my own issues to deal with and just couldn't deal with theirs anymore.

ayrt

I had a friend like that I purposely lost touch with too. It was worse because it was always merch for whatever her anime obsession of the month was, too

I am not saying poor people do not deserve entertainment because they do, they are free to buy whatever they want and everyone needs joy. But once it gets to the point where you need to put up a gofundme for rent because you couldnt resist buying 20 imported doujin arrrrrrg

I ended a friendship on similar terms. She and her BF were on Disability, living hand to mouth. They were never sure if they'd have enough money to pay their heating bill or feed their dogs and it was a huge source of anxiety for both of them. BUT THEY WOULDN'T STOP BUYING CRAP ON EBAY. No seriously, do NOT spend $125 on knick-knacks and then sob to me about how your dogs are going to go hungry next week or your house is freezing because you couldn't pay your power bills.

I gave them money because I couldn't stand the thought of them not eating but eventually, I just had to leave that friendship. They refused to help themselves and they'd get mad at anyone who suggested that you know, maybe you should stay off Ebay this month if money is so tight.
