Out of curiosity, have you seen 8mm? At the point I stopped watching it, Cage was attempting a very restrained and subtle performance, not going over the top once. I felt like he could have been replaced by a mop. (Though from the plot synopsis, I imagine he must have a big ol' freakout later.)

The name rings a bell but I can't remember what it's about if I have seen it, he can do more toned-down acting but it doesn't last that long(and tbh I'm not watching him for subtle nuanced acting :P).

Another anon: I think it's the one where he's investigating snuff movies. Peter Stormare is the baddie. I didn't like it at all.

I saw 8MM and liked it. Esp. James Gandolfini and Peter Stormare's performances. Nic Cage did a decent job in it.
