Please educate yourself OP. Of course he would have know about vibrators and other devices used to treat "female hysteria". In Victorian times, doctors blamed most mental health problems and plenty of physical problems on female hysteria. One of the ways to treat it was for the woman to be brought to orgasm. Doctors got tired of manually doing the job so plenty of machines were created to do the job. Including some of the first vibrators. And since Whitman lived during a time when female hysteria was all the rage of course he would have heard of it.

You're welcome from you friendly amateur historian.

Condescending much?

No, just informative.

I think it was the "Please educate yourself" part that made the tone seem condescending.

OP:

That's really cool to know. Thanks for correcting me about that. (sorry if this sounds sarcastic at all. I'm actually genuinely grateful you shared that with me. Thanks :) )

"Please educate yourself.'

Please take a long dive off a short pier and take that awful phrase with you.

+1. I hate that SJW lingo.

Pretty much confined to the medical establishment so no, there is no reason for him to have known about it "of course".

You're welcome, from an actual, practising historian.

This argument is actually not that widely researched and is in fact derived mainly from a single book from the nineties (Rachel Maines' The Technology of Orgasm), which treats the subject with a rather strong brush and makes a lot of assumptions and conclusions not necessarily supported entirely by the evidence--essentially, it's one of those stories that sounds very compelling, and may well be largely correct, but people have embraced it more quickly and uncritically than they should. Not to say that it's not true--just that from a historical point of view it might not warrant the level of smugness you're giving it here.

You're welcome from your friendly professional medical historian.

Erm, why would medical treatment for women that wasn't as widespread as you think it is or even actually in existence be known of by a gay man?
