"Phoning it in" is just not an accurate description of Cage's acting career over the last 15 years. Easy to mock, yes. Full of bad decisions to take roles in awful movies, yes. But absolutely not phoning it in - even in the really bad movies, and certainly not in the good ones.

If nothing else, Port of Call New Orleans should absolve Cage of any accusations of phoning anything in. That movie is insane, and he plays a character who is constantly on the verge of or in the middle of a breakdown, and he plays it with complete, balls-out intensity, and it's fucking amazing. And he pours every ounce of sweat and effort he has into that performance. And, looked it in a certain light, it's absolutely ludicrous - but it is not in a million years phoned in.
