Because they're mocking themselves to guard against mockery from others. Though it's a variety of aloofness that's just a fact of life and not really unique to this term.

It's bad because they act like to ship is a shameful thing instead of a "just for fun" thing.
I know some people take stuff too seriously and make a fool of themselves but I don't think you should be ashamed about liking something. Unless the pairing itself is squicky, then I'd understand people being guilty about it.

These self-depreciating people are kinda like wet blankets trying to safeguard themselves from criticism by either criticizing fellow shippers or calling themselves trash.

I'm all for self-depreciation but seeing people ashamed of liking something is kind of a bummer.

Because faux self-deprecation is annoying. There's nothing wrong with being straightforward about liking something seriously. It's like people who say "my story sucks sry" and act like that's a shield against saying it's bad.

All I meant was that they're lying. They do take it seriously, and calling themselves trash is how they pretend that they don't.
