Man, this makes me feel nostalgic. Kinda wanna replay it now. I shipped it too, but even as a teen I was never into classic yaoi tropes so I avoided all fanfic for reasons similar to yours. I liked how Fayt was completely neutral in handling Albel's drama mongering ways when everyone else was UGHHH all the time.
