Yeah, Jamie's rape and subsequent issues with his sexuality/self-worth/Rapist drive enormous chunks of the next, what... 7500 pages of text in the novels. So it's not really something that could have plausibly been omitted. Ever since Outlander was confirmed, this was the one thing that everyone who knows the book was wondering how it was going to be handled. While they didn't deviate from the book that much, it's much more horrifying to see than to read.
