I guess I'll put it in the second post, so if other people have stupid petty rants they can get them out.

I have watched this person pull a 180 in the year I've followed them on tumblr and it's just pissing me off, especially because it seems like the reason it all happened is that they suddenly discovered what it means to look at things critically. And there's nothing wrong with that, but there has to be some balance.

So, when I first started following them, they would get excited about games and characters and ships, and every now and then they would talk about LGBT issues or feminism, and that was cool. But now, all they can talk about is the problematic parts of all the games they used to love, and they hate a ship that they used to consider their OTP because one of the characters has a shady past (they used to be able to see more of the good in the character, and now they can't). And suddenly, out of nowhere, they've started headcanoning the other half of the OTP as asexual, and it seems like the only reason they're doing it is because "representation."

That last ticks me off the most honestly, because there's no canon support for it, and because I don't think it's good to headcanon someone as a sexuality just because that sexuality is "in." Plus, they didn't used to headcanon them that way, which makes it pretty obvious that it's part of the whole "being critical about media" thing and is more about points than being sincere.

I really shouldn't care and should just unfollow them, but I liked them and their blog, and now I just find myself rolling my eyes and getting annoyed, especially since now they're trashing their old OTP in a really passive-aggressive way. It's a popular ship, so they're almost talking in code about it, and even admitted they don't want to be too overt because "I'll lose so many followers LOL." Dude, that's so crass. It's like pretending to be friends with someone and occasionally making comments about them that have the subtext of "I don't like you" while they're standing next to you. Have your opinion, state it plain, and let the chips fall where they may. Don't try to have it both ways. You know, come to think of it, that pisses me off more than the asexual thing.

It happens and it sucks. Unfollow before your blood pressure is in a perpetually heightened state.

This kind of sounds like you're taking things a bit too seriously/personally.

Yeah I probably am a little, which is why I think it's stupid and petty. Passive-aggression is something that really, really bothers me in general, though. I think that's why that part gets to me so much.

That's what the unfollow button is for.

You don't have to let them have it both ways, you can choose to walk away and ignore them and their opinions. Whether or not they give a shit that they've lost you as a follower, you've still demonstrated that there are consequences, however minor, to behaving like an ass.
