I must admit, I do not get the hate either. All I can think of is that the audience thought it was going to be an action movie and and marketing screwed up in making them realize it wasn't. I suppose that is understandable now that superhero movie and action movie are synonymous, still depressing though.

Financially it wasn't great. They had a massive budget and I know while it did okay-ish, it wasn't nearly good enough in terms of returns.

I appreciate it MUCH, MUCH more than Man of Steel though.

There are some parts I don't particularly like (it's a little creepy that Superman spys on Lois and Lois herself was quite miscast) but I love the emotional arc of the film even though I think the kid was a bit of a cop-out.

I also ADORED the fact that the guy Lois was seeing was a genuinely good guy and a bit of a badass himself.

I liked his stiff nipples. Period.

I don't get why this one was hated and Man of Steel was loved. Maybe in some sense MOS was a better movie, but Superman Returns was far and away a better Superman movie. And I found it enjoyable. I don't get the complaints of it being boring. Not boring at all to me. I get the annoyance at repeating the real estate idea from the first movie, but I don't care I still love it.

The only thing I don't love is the Lois Lane casting, but then again I've never been happy with any of the film Lois casting. Yes, I dislike Margot Kidder, blasphemy, I know. I've really only liked the TV versions though (Terry Hatcher and Erica Durance).

In regards to Man of Steel, I have seen it panned quite a bit (and it's significantly worse rated than Superman Returns) but it seems like it has a stronger contingent of fans.

I've never been a huge fan of Superman but I do like the first two Christopher Reeve films and this one. They feel like they have a real sense of humanity to them (funnily enough).

Agreed on the Lois Lane casting. I don't think the actress did a terrible job but she just looked and was SO YOUNG. It was jarring.

It is less MoS has fans, and more it has a bunch of anti trad-superman fans following it. Grimdark champions who don't so much love the movie, but like attacking people who are fans of a more idealistic paradigm hat Superman used to represent.

Lois is a difficult character to get right. It is all part of the trend of DC basically screwing up female characters. One of the things I can't agree with current fandom over in the current Superbro strip is Lois outing Clark as Supes, I mean for a solid thirty years outing Clark for the purposes of forcing him into marriage was pretty much her only personality trait.

As long as I cover my wears during "Didn't there used to be two of those?" I love this movie. It's a Superman movie I can watch with my kids, which MOS isn't at all. Besides, Kevin Spacey was clearly having an awesome time. When I can watch a movie and see an actor is loving their job, that makes it so much more fun for me.

I actually really, really like that movie. Routh was a great Clark. I can see him being the son of farmer. I only wish there were more Clark moments. They could have something very special there. Routh would have knocked it out of the park.

Brandon Routh is the Timothy Dalton of Supermen. He was great for the part, but he just didn't get a good enough script to really do it justice.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-13 02:14 am (UTC)(link)
That is an incredibly good analogy.

BR should have gotten another chance at Superman. He was the best thing in the movie and he got the vibe right.

I always liked this movie and after seeing Man of Steel I appreciate it so much more.

Bless you, OP

Bless you, OP!

Yeah, I don't get the hate for SR either. I remember when the movie first came out, the critics loved it but it "underperformed" at the BO (the studio said they hoped it would make $100 mil more, at least), and the fan hate grew worse and worse and the RottenTomatoes rating dropped. Rogert Ebert called Routh's Superman "monosyllabic" and the word kept being thrown around gleefully by fuming fans for months and monthsss in reviews and fan discussions. So many loathed the movie, it surprised me a great deal.

I understand that people wanted more action scenes and "Superman actually punching something" but the criticism and backlash the movie got was waaay overblown, IMO. I felt a huge disconnect with the majority of the male oriented fandom (superhero forums, etc). Fandom on lj was much better but it was small (still bigger than the MOS fandom, there's hardly any fic and that says *a lot*).

Isn't it funny how the same crowd who dissed SR (and still does) now makes excuses for MOS?

Me, I was more disappointed than ambivalent about MOS and really wish Routh was still Superman. After all this time he remains my favourite and he looks even more like Superman than he did before. His Clark was perfectly adorkable and sweet and genuine, I love him so much! The perfect imaginary boyfriend I daydreamed about as a little girl. :)

Indeed, I remember how naysayers wanted more Superman scenes in SR but I wanted to see even more of CLARK, to be honest. ^^ Always Clark. Sure, there's plenty of Clark in MOS but he's not Daily Planet!Clark, he's someone else, someone I don't recognize, and it makes me sad. Maybe it's because in MOS it feels like Clark's the mask and Superman the true identity. For all the manpain and angsting he did, I couldn't feel much for Henry's Clark in the end. :( Hence my main issue with the film.

Brandon Routh was such a fantastic Superman/Clark

I loved the visuals, but I would have loved it solely for not bashing the other guy in the love triangle and in fact having them all work together.

(Also they filmed some of the space scenes at the Twelve Apostles near where I live and the next day one of them collapsed - the one at the front of my icon!)

This is the thing that even made me like Superman in the first place. Prior to SR I thought eh was boring and overpowered and thus didn't find him very compelling as a character.

Ah...yes...

(Anonymous) 2015-06-13 06:05 am (UTC)(link)
The scene where he floats around up there, listening to everything going on on Earth, and ignores all the terrorism, genocides, and human trafficking to come down and stop a bank robbery? What a dick.

This was the first Superman movie I saw. By the end, I was rooting for Luthor. My (now ex) wife suggested I go watch the older 80's movies. Well, I sat through the first one (which had the same plot from the villain, more or less), and I wanted to throw her into an earthquake chasm.

I feel you may have seriously misunderstood the Superman character. Perhaps you'd feel more at home with an 80s Arnie movie instead.
