Are you kidding? Sirius totally needed to die to demonstrate to Harry the virtue of responsibility and adult discipline. Sirius had none. He was a fuck up, from the time he tried to murder a classmate using one of his friends as the murder weapon, to his inability to keep it together and say clearly and simply "Peter Pettigrew was the traitor" which landed him in prison for a decade, all the way to him having to be kept indoors even when he busted out because he kept on fucking up to the point he was a goddamn liability to the whole order. Sirius existed simply to show Harry that some people can only be horrible warnings and not good examples. Harry was better man for Sirius' death.

Going to completely disagree there. To me Sirius was such a tragic figure. He never had the chance to grow up. Yes, he was a bully as a teenager the same as James was. Then James grew up. Sirius sort of did in the sense of fighting Voldemort. He was working on it. Then his best friend dies and he ends up in hell for something he didn't do. Then he escapes only to be forced back into his childhood home to wallow in all his horrible memories. Then he dies. He deserved more. He deserved the chance to really have an adult life and to be a godfather to Harry, and Harry deserved to have one parental figure in his life.

Ooh I like this, even as someone who was disappointed in his death. Don't know why I never saw that angle, but it feels very satisfying to think of it like an aesop fable of sorts.
