I wouldn't say "every," but I do think death is seriously overrated as a storytelling tool. I particularly hate obligatory mentor deaths, obligatory redeemed villain deaths, and obligatory disfigured people deaths. (And I guess obligatory wife deaths, but everyone mocks those these days.)

In movies, at least, you've got a tragedy choice. Death or Rape? You need something hard hitting that you can show quickly but not have any physical damage to the hero or bog down in the angst of an anciliary character, so that is death of a loved one or getting raped.
