I think Boone on Lost was important because it set a tone and kept anyone from thinking "Oh, it's a magic island and no one will ever die." It established the stakes.

I kind of disagree because it happened in such an 'event' episode. Establishing that the Island will not save everyone was important, yes, and it was well-executed, but to me the level of huge drama surrounding it and the parallel with Aaron's birth made it less 'anyone can die' and more 'anyone can die in the really serious, important midseason-finale episodes.'
