(Anonymous) 2015-06-13 12:28 am (UTC)(link)English is my first language, and I still get very, very confused by it too, so don't feel too bad about it. As long as you're aware that there is a difference and are aware they can offend, that's a good start.
As someone who can't possibly know how being called either of those things feels, I'm just guessing at best, so I feel that the most respectful thing to do is just ask someone how they want to be addressed (if addressing them as a POC or some other term is even necessary -- most people like to be called by their names, I've found, not by characteristics) and then do as they say.
