Standen is hot, but he seems to have bad luck when it comes to series. Robin Hood went off the rails cray-cray before getting canceled, Camelot was terribad and unintentionally amusing at the same time, and Vikings has always had problems with the writing, pacing, and character development. :/ I almost feel bad for him.

My biggest problem with the character is that I'm not sure how I'm supposed to feel about him. Should I like him, hate him, what?

He was in Robin Hood and Camelot? ...Huh, I even watched Camelot and didn't remember that. (Shows what a big impact that series left on me.)

I didn't get far with Robin Hood, not even for the glorious Richard Armitage.

IA though, Vikings is kind of a hot mess. It isn't very consistent. (The ridiculous time skips and important character moments they completely bulldoze over astound me. Like, how we never got to see Ragnar and Lagertha talk about the death of their children, or how we never got to see Athelstan's reaction to almost being sacrificed. There are so many things this show should do and doesn't.)

Maybe we're supposed to be conflicted?

Camelot was pretty forgettable. Except for Morgan Le Fay, I remember her. And Richard Armitage wasn't the only good thing about RH, but he wasn't enough to save it either.

Vikings isn't bad, it's just that they don't know what they want to do with any of the characters. Athelstan's angst and soul searching went on forever and only ended because George Blagden got another role. His relationship with Ragnar and Lagertha was never fully defined. Like, where did that sacrifice thing come from anyway? There was no indication they wanted him dead. Does he resent them? Suffer from Stockholm Syndrome?

I dunno. Having mixed feelings about characters is okay, but I'd prefer it if that was intentional on the part of the writers and not just crummy writing.
