No, it's not. I have friends who have been suicidal. I also have friends who have done risky things that could end in death (like mountain climbing) because to them, being able to do that thing was their dream and their desire to fulfill that dream outweighed the possibility of death.

The mindsets involved are 100% different.

You honestly cannot see the difference in doing something that can result in death if something goes wrong, and something that will result in death if everything goes right (or if something goes wrong in all but a handful of possible ways)?

DA

Either you mean "You honestly CAN see the difference.." or you've just completely contradicted your original point.

Ayrt is saying that yes, there IS a vast difference between setting out with death as the intention and setting out with death as a potential consequence, however likely that consequence is. Otherwise you're argument must also emcompass that everyone who drinks alcohol, or everyone who takes any (legal or otherwise) medication is inherently committing suicide if doing so results in their death. Or that everyone who gets behind the wheel of a car is committing suicide if they have an accident.

Pointing out that, no, jumping knowingly to your inevitable death because you can't fly is not the same thing as mountain climbing is not contradicting my original point that no matter what kind of flimsy veneer of 'following your dream' you want to paint over it, jumping to your inevitable death is suicide.

The anon I was replying to literally, actively, equated mountain climbing with specifically jumping to your death because for the few seconds between when you leap and when you go splat, you can feel like you're flying.

The kiwi was definitely going to die though

I think you're conflating suicide and depression. Not all suicidal things mean that someone has to be depressed. You can do a glorious heroic suicidal run into something without it having to do with depression after all

Yeah, like... there's a relatively high chance you can die doing free climbing, but it's not a guarantee. There's no way this "flight" could have ended with the kiwi surviving.

but you wouldn't say that someone who did a glorious heroic suicidal run into something committed suicide if their ultimate objective wasn't death. no one says that soldiers who stay behind to hold a position so that their men can escape committed suicide, you say that they gave their lives for their fellow soldiers.

suicide is doing something specifically for the purpose of dying. the reasons behind it do matter.

But...people DO call things like that "suicide." You've never heard the term "suicide mission?"
