Just general frustration. Folk get overlooked or ignored or are not confident enough to share if they're aboriginal because reactions if you're not darker skinned tend to be disbelief or "you're not a real one though" or suggestions you're only in it for scholarships/aboriginal identified jobs etc etc.

Also i'm working on an employment program right now so it's something i'm gonna have to deal with, cause stuff like this in the news (thankfully not our news yet) makes it harder to get the younger people to come forward so we can welcome them into the work community (as opposed to family community)

Well i'm aboriginal but of the lighter skinned type. i'm involved casually in the local communities and at work, NAIDOC week is coming up (whole week around aboriginal and torrest strait islander culture. have events, history, CURRENT culture, music, art and general celebrations. mildly concerned about the racists fuck groups that popped up recently, primarily against muslims but they're pretty racist all over the place. local cops are usually good at responding tho) and we just had National Sorry Day (government apologised for occupation anniversary) and Mabo day (he made it so aboriginal people could own land...in 1992)

I only know tidbits about Maori myself but there's a lot of parallels and similar racism. There's no "full blooded" maori left, they're all mixed thanks to eradication. There are some "full blooded" aboriginal but it depends on what mob you are from. My mob is loosely called Palawa and none of us are full blooded either on account of being eradicated until there were about 200 of us left - officially. During WWII some were enlisted to help in the wars then were left behind so distant relatives in locations like South Africa where they were "left".

My grandfather is the first 'casualty' of breeding out the colour, so tecnically I've not been "Bred out" yet. I think 4th generation you were considered to be 'clean'

Yeah, there were colour guides to assimilating.

Even now we have "Certificates of Aboriginality" to 'prove' you are an Aboriginal. Which I both hate (because holy historical connotations and tracking, used to be you had certificates that you were aboriginal and therefore not allowed in many areas) and love it (can wave it in people's faces because fuck you I can trace my aboriginal ancestry in written and archived evidence to 1770.

Actually I have no idea where it is, i think i've misplaced it. which is annoying cause i may need it one day.

also someone tried to suggest you have to renew it every 3 years? to prevent fraud? practically unknown and miniscule fraud because you have to both identify, be related by blood and be recognised by the community to get any of these benefits???

Thanks for responding. That idea and practice of "breeding out the color" ( which makes people sound like animals to bred,which is disgusting) is well spread, but it's crazy to see just how widespread it actually is.

Good luck :( it just makes me sad to see people alienated from their culture and roots.
