Burnt

(Anonymous) 2015-06-13 08:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I got a mild sunburn on my arms today from walking downtown (pride festival: huge crowd and I can walk through crowds, but dislike crowds so didn't really pay attention to the people and the outfits they wore). Though I think it got worse on my left drive due to driving home and the sun being on the left side of the car.

But I've always wondered how is it that my upper arms can get burnt but my bare legs don't? I wore capris and birkenstocks yet the legs and feet are fine (and I had to walk back to the car because waiting for the shuttle in the hot sun wasn't going to work). So why is it? Has anyone managed to get their legs burnt while walking around?

Your legs are shaded, just in the nature of the thing, by your body people around you, etc. Unless you're, like, out on a long hike in the open or something I think it's be quite difficult to get sunburned walking around.

I don't think I've ever burnt my legs (although I've gotten significant tans on te tops of my feet). It's probably a matter of part of your legs always being in partial shade, either blocked by your body or facing away from the sun, and which part that is constantly changes as you move. Your shoulders are getting direct sun all the time unless you stand in the shade.

I have gotten my legs burnt, but only from, like, sitting out in the sun.

Also I'm the sunburntest motherfucker you ever saw, so

Yes. Usually the backs of my legs and the tops of my feet. It's really painful. I do not recommend it.

Simple. Your arms are closer to the sun. And given that we move our arms outwardly a lot more than we kick our legs up, our arms are much more likely to get burnt before our legs do (unless your laying down on the beach).
