I don't know if this is the same thing but it's probably similar: there's this one celeb I'm into whom I just can't bring myself to follow in media. There are other, far hotter people I like whose pictures I'd freely look at and whose interviews I'd watch all the long day, but not this guy.

Do you mean cosplaying an OC as in strictly an original character you wrote into fic, or dressing up as an original character in the sense of "I'm a generic elf/Jedi/Starfleet officer?" I see no problem with the latter, even if you make up a bit of backstory.
