Do people even do this often? I mean, I don't quite understand it but there's no harm in it either.

It shows up more in fandoms were the creators pretty much say "hey make your own characters and have fun with it!" Like Harry Potter, Homestuck, Star Wars, Steven Universe, etc.

Ah, I always see people cosplaying as canon characters. In something like Star Wars it would be easy to cosplay as some random Jedi or Stormtrooper and I don't see anything wrong with that either. (Or Star Trek... You could be a red shirt, or an alien. Those make sense to me.)

If they're having fun though I don't see the problem, even if no one else gets it.

Yeah I was going to say this.

I dunno if I'd DO it, but I wouldn't act like someone who did committed some big sin or something.

I mean if the cosplay looked really good, regardless of where it came from I'd actually be impressed.

Yup, if I saw a really intricate and fashionable cosplay and didn't recognize it I don't think it would give me too much pause to find out it was that person's OC. I would probably just appreciate the creativity and effort put into it.
