Re: Strong opinions

If you type "y'all," my opinion of you instantly drops.

At least "u" has the excuse of being shorter than "you."

(This doesn't apply to actually saying "y'all in real life conversation).

but if they mean the plural you it's shorter than "you all" or "you guys"

and on the internet if you only say "you" people take it all personally and think you're pointing them out

I've never understood why people don't use "one" when they want to talk about something in a general sense.

Unless you're actually addressing a group of people (in which case just using "you" seems fine to me), it seems like saying "one should look at" or "one might interpret this" would make it much clearer that a general thought is being made, not directed at one person or group.

tone, imo

people accuse you of being pretentious

...Why?

Why in the world would they think I'm trying to be pretentious because I'm trying to make it clear that it's a general statement not directed at any one person or group?

general anti-intellectualism?

Wow. That's just...really surprising. I adopted the use of "one" after people got upset thinking I was attacking them or them and their friends/supporters personally.

yeah, it's hard to post something casually using "one" like that. suddenly, one begins to look stuffy and overly formal!

Typing "y'all" is fine with me.

But type "yall" and I'm not reading anymore.

It's not because I'm anal about the apostrophe being there, it's just that the lack of it almost always tips me off that you're about to say something obnoxious.

I do this. Sorry (not).

also "u" is way more annoying.
