YOU LISTEN HERE -- You should not shoulder the blame for this alone.

I'm a graduate student in biology at a fairly prestigious university.

Let me tell you how we train our undergrads:

-The PI meets with them to discuss contributions to a project
-We assign them to a postdoc or graduate student.
-We give them the protocols
-That mentor (postdoc or graduate student) GOES THROUGH the protocol with the undergrad, step-by-step until they understand it
-When you feel confident in one technique, ONLY THEN can you do it on your own
-Any new techniques are ALWAYS learned with a mentor

But it sounds like your lab basically threw you in the water with no lesson on how to swim and no life preserver.

Should you have asked for help earlier? Yes. But if they expected you to just read the protocol and do it yourself, then they were DEFINITELY neglecting your training.

See if you can talk to the PI or the dean maybe?

SA

You're not dumb. I promise you that. An ENORMOUS part of science is mentorship. You just had the bad luck to land on shitty mentors. Don't give up on your dream. Take care of yourself.
