Re: Strong opinions
also cats and dogs don't "murder" wildlife. they have instincts to hunt and no concept of murder.
(The best reason to keep cats indoors is for the safety of the cats.)
Re: Strong opinions
You're really, really wrong about that. Cats and dogs both kill for sport. They're domesticated, but they have prey drives that function regardless of whether or not they are physically satiated. With dogs it's a little easier to control because people tend to have them on leashes when they're outside, but cats are literally killing birds and rodents because they enjoy killing.
But don't take my word for it. I highly encourage you to read some animal behaviour studies on the issue. I used to think it was fine for a cat to be outdoors until I did and realized exactly how much my furry friend would, on average, decimate local wildlife populations for no reason other than bloodlust.
Re: Strong opinions
Don't anthropomorphize animals. They don't experience "bloodlust", they kill because it's their instinct to do so. Your condescending attitude is already grating on me, and the fact that you're lecturing me about how animals work while displaying a poor understanding of their motivations makes it so much worse. Please stop.

Moreover, I wasn't anthropomorphizing cats by my use of language, I just wasn't pulling out animal behaviour jargon because I have been criticized for that in the past. Now, and in the future, I'll know better.
Cats and dogs both have prey drives that they will act on regardless of physiological satiety. Cats in particular are responsible for massive numbers of avian and small mammal deaths per year. Dogs, however, can also be a contributing factor.
The best reason to keep cats indoors is to keep them from preying on small animals solely because it is a rewarding behaviour.
btw, "instinct" is no longer used to describe animal behaviour. We describe behaviours in terms of stereotyped and learned behaviours.
I'm not interested in getting into an argument with out about whether we can ascribe correlations between human concepts of behaviour and that of nonhuman species though, so I'll stop there. But really, you're also entirely wrong about my understanding of this subject. It was my undergrad honours.
Re: Strong opinions
The bit about the best reason for cats to be kept indoors is a matter of opinion. Given that cats are pets and many people are very close to their pets, and the unexpected death of a pet can be devastating, I'd say their safety is at least as important as any other reason.
Re: Strong opinions
I honestly don't care though. This is a casual conversation, not a thesis defense. On the other hand if you want to criticize me for my language choice when I'm not writing for publication as an example that I don't understand what I'm talking about, turnabout is fair play.
Re: Strong opinions
I already explained why I had an issue with the whole "murder" thing.
