[Outerlander vs. Twilight]

(Anonymous) 2015-06-14 07:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not sure that it's unfair if people like it because it's pretty

prettiness is a real thing

(Anonymous) 2015-06-14 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
The secret didn't say it was unfair to like pretty things, though. It said it was unfair to give it a pass for the dysfunctional relationships in it.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-14 08:51 pm (UTC)(link)
dunno where to start... I hate Twilight. I have mixed feelings about Outlander. I wouldn't compare the two to each other, and here's why.

First of all, Outlander has had a pretty big book fandom since the early-mid 90s. It hasn't thrived because of its romance aspect, whereas with Twilight it's the opposite. Outlander actually has a fairly big number of fans who kinda dislike the romance. They stick around for the historical aspects and/or the time-traveling. Or Lord John, who has his own spin-off series (which I highly recommend if you love Outlander but dislike reading about Claire/Jamie).
There's been a huge rise in fans since the show started, and I'll admit I haven't really taken the time to get to know that side of the fandom

Secondly, I don't see where you get the idea that fans give Claire/Jamie a pass.
A huge number of fans are feeling iffy about the belt scene. A huge number of fans do not care for the constant abuse/sexism/rape threats/etc that the characters go through.
People do call out questionable behavior. Not all of them, because some people are more concerned about sexy times, but a decent number of them.

Thirdly, I think the dynamics between Edward/Bella and Claire/Jamie are not comparable.
"Old-as-fuck vampire gets together with an impressionable young girl. Emotional abuse rears its ugly head when she won't do as she's told. She becomes dependent on him. We never find out if he's sorry for being a dick, but that doesn't matter to the female protagonist either, so why should we care?"
VS
"Modern woman goes back in time. Unwillingly marries a younger guy but then falls for him. Physical abuse rears its ugly head when she won't do as she's told. However, the guy later realizes that punishing his wife (he already disapproves of violence against women in general) isn't his style and feels shitty about what he did that one time for the rest of his life. In fact, he feels extra shitty when he realizes why his wife disobeyed him."

Lastly, I think both Twilight and Outlander are very easy on the eyes. That's not why they're well-liked though.
In Outlander's case, I think it helps that so many fans are Scottish. The show explores Scotland's history and politics (that are still a hot issue btw) and it certainly doesn't hurt that the show has real Scottish people playing Scottish people.

Idk idk this is becoming a big essay and I'm not even a big Outlander fan lol

TL;DR - I disagree with you, OP. So very much.

+1 to your entire comment. I won't repeat your points, but I'm one of those readers who picked up Outlander for the time travel aspects. I found the first book a bit of a chore, and I do skim through the romance/sex scenes, but I really enjoy the effort she puts into the historical settings and atmosphere, and I've read all the subsequent books (now moving onto Lord John, which I like quite a lot). And while I don't like the sexism, it would be kind of idiotic to have someone go back to the past and NOT experience sexism.

Gabaldon's writing is not the best, particularly in the first book, but I found it did improve with subsequent books. Not sure you can say the same with Meyers, but that's another topic.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-15 04:17 am (UTC)(link)
A little OT but I enjoy the Lord John series a lot. The books have more of a defined plot centered around mysteries instead of rambling adventures that never seem to end.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-15 07:52 am (UTC)(link)
kinda fitting, as I seem to recall that Diana Gabaldon originally wanted to write mystery/detective stories instead of romance

I totally get why Lord John got his own series

The above anon did a good analysis of why Claire/Jaime isn't the same as Bela/Edward. I also disagree that Claire is the same as Bela. Sure, they both have Mary Sue qualities, but they are vastly different characters. Bela is mostly passive. She seems to have no life outside of Edward. In fact, her diary entries completely stopped for months when she wasn't with Edward, because apparently nothing of note happens when Edward isn't in her life. (This is when I stopped reading the book series, so maybe it changed in later books?) Claire is at least proactive. She has a life. She has skills. She speaks up. She does things. Heck, she even rescues Jaime at one point instead of being a constant standard damsel in distress.

I didn't love the book series, and stopped before I finished it, but I have no idea how anyone can seriously find them to be the same, with Outlander only excepted from criticism because it is "pretty".

Ugh, I tried to watch Outlander just yesterday, hoping it would be so bad it was good, but it was just bad. I didn't last an episode. Wonderful scenery though, ravishingly photographed. Appalling script.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-14 10:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I thought the 3 episodes after that were interesting (plus the last 2 episodes)

iirc the time-traveling happens at the end of episode 1 or at the beginning of ep 2

you should at least finish episode 2 before you judge

(don't get me wrong, it's a fantastic/terrible soap done well... but it's a soap)

It happens 2/3 of the way through the episode 1.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-14 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
How can a character be a Sue if they're complex? Having more than one layer/dimension to one's characterization would automatically mean one is not a true Sue, right?
philstar22: (Default)

[personal profile] philstar22 2015-06-14 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
No? It depends on your definition of sue. There are a lot of different ones.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-15 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
'Mary Sue' is the new 'drabble'. They both used to mean something, and now they don't.

Maybe they mean she's a less transparent author insert?

(Anonymous) 2015-06-15 04:20 am (UTC)(link)
Not necessarily. Claire could arguably qualify as a Sue because she's portrayed as some sort of time traveling superwoman in terms of her medical skills. No penicillin? She'll make some out of moldy bread! No needles? She'll fashion them out of porcupine quills! Life threatening injury? She'll totally fix everything with her amazing knowledge of modern technology that she'll be able to duplicate in pioneer times, somehow!

On top of that, she's super hot and lots of people want to bone her.

I've always avoided the series because I got the impression Claire was married to someone in "modern times", then travels back in time and falls for another guy? I was also given the impression she was "torn between the two", and honestly, I had no interest in reading a book about a woman falling in love with another man while married.

If I'm wrong, then: oops?

(Anonymous) 2015-06-15 02:05 am (UTC)(link)
Nope, that's pretty much what happens.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-15 02:45 am (UTC)(link)
That seems kinda silly? Like, if you got transported to another world and had no chance of getting back, would you just pine for your lost spouse and remain celibate forever, or would you get on with your life? I mean, it's okay if you'd choose the former, but I don't think it's right to judge someone for doing the latter. They may not have been parted by death per se, but it might as well be death, considering they can never see each other again.

spoilers for Outlander

(Anonymous) 2015-06-15 03:15 am (UTC)(link)
if you don't mind spoilers

she had was married to the man in the past to exploit a legal loophole to escape from someone who wanted to kill her. it wasn't her idea, and she ends up falling in love with him more or less after that

Every time I scroll past the pictures you used, OP ...

(Anonymous) 2015-06-15 04:19 am (UTC)(link)
... I imagine Edward sneaking hungry looks at the neck of the woman in the picture above him. :p

It's "Outlander", not "Outerlander". Just because I'm being pedantic today.

I read/watch this mainly because of Lord John Grey, who is, surprise, surprise, unfortunately in love with Jaime.
