The above anon did a good analysis of why Claire/Jaime isn't the same as Bela/Edward. I also disagree that Claire is the same as Bela. Sure, they both have Mary Sue qualities, but they are vastly different characters. Bela is mostly passive. She seems to have no life outside of Edward. In fact, her diary entries completely stopped for months when she wasn't with Edward, because apparently nothing of note happens when Edward isn't in her life. (This is when I stopped reading the book series, so maybe it changed in later books?) Claire is at least proactive. She has a life. She has skills. She speaks up. She does things. Heck, she even rescues Jaime at one point instead of being a constant standard damsel in distress.

I didn't love the book series, and stopped before I finished it, but I have no idea how anyone can seriously find them to be the same, with Outlander only excepted from criticism because it is "pretty".
