Exercise Machine Stuff, idk.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-15 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Does anyone have experience with buying a large piece of workout equipment? Especially with an elliptical/cross-trainer? I've tried googling the advantages they have over other equipment but I'd like first-hand information if anyone has any?

I might be going to sleep soon as it's pretty late here and I just got in from work/have work in the morning, so a bit more personal info below in case of questions:

Bit of a random question, but I figured here's as good a place to ask as any. I'm considering getting an exercise bike/cross-trainer/treadmill to use at home as I have a couple of hours in the morning which are free and I seriously need to lose some weight and also sort my mind/lifestyle out (depression and alcoholism) - getting into a regular exercise routine seems like a good idea both for the exercise itself and for a reason to get up instead of drinking a bottle of wine in bed before work.

I had an exercise bike for a while (until it broke and I couldn't replace it due to not working at the time) a few years ago and this sort of routine really worked for me, which is why I'm jumping straight to this instead of something with less commitment in terms of investment. Going to a gym isn't really an option and walking/jogging is doable but not appealing. I've tried exercise routines etc in the past and never stuck to them. I have the money to sink on a large item and since it worked in the past, it kinda makes sense to me.

I bought a combi exercise bike/cross trainer a couple of years back and found it reasonably useful. I'd suggest buying from a specialist shop though so you can try instore rather than buy blind online.

*nods* That makes sense, but unfortunately getting to a specialist shop might prove tricky - the closest place I can imagine there is one is ~2 hours each way by public transport and I'm currently working 7days/3evenings a week x.x I may have to rely on online reviews and hope for the best...

Not the advice you're looking for, but try walking (as in, getting outside and walking). The fresh air and sunshine will do you more good than pounding away on an indoor treadmill.

"Not the advice you're looking for" - So why make this comment? Especially when their original post specifically says "walking/jogging is doable but not appealing".

They're looking for gym equipment, and they have the money to spend on gym equipment. If you don't have any recs, that's cool, but then don't offer advice that goes directly against what they're asking for. Seriously, think how annoying it would be if people did that to you every time you were looking for recommendations on anything...

"Hey, I know you wanted a slash rec with hurt/comfort, but here's a het pairing with mpreg and BDSM!"

"Hey, I know you said you didn't want to eat Thai food tonight, but here's a list of recommendations for Thai restaurants!"

"Hey, I know you don't like scary movies, but I think you should really watch [list of horror movies] because I like horror movies and think that watching them would do you more good than watching movies you like!"

Dude, chill. They said it's "not appealing." I'm trying to make it more appealing. You put a shitload of effort into a hateful reply, when I'm trying to be helpful.

It wasn't at all hateful, just honest about inquiring why you'd deliberately recommend something someone has already stated upfront doesn't work for them. Is that truly how you'd want people to treat you when you need help? Honestly?

Thanks for the advice! I realise that outdoor walking has a lot of benefits that indoor exercise doesn't, and I do enjoy (proper) walking, but I'm trying to get into a strict regular routine of exercising every morning. The weather's so unreliable here even in the summer that I feel it would be easy to slip into 'Oh it's raining this morning, I won't go... well, I didn't go yesterday so I can miss today too... oh hey it's two weeks later!'

Also the only time slot I have available is a couple of hours before work and it seems a lot less appealing to get up, get ready, go out, come home, get ready, go to work vs. get up, exercise, dress, work.

I do think trying to make an effort for more outdoor walking is a good idea but I'm really time-limited and I like a walk I can get my teeth into - like, a full afternoon set aside, which unfortunately work hours won't let me do more than once or twice a month.

I bought an elliptical second hand at a used equipment store for about $400 and I like it. Not sure what advantages there are, I've just always liked ellipticals over other equipment.

I kinda feel like they'd be more comfortable than a treadmill where you're just pounding away? And I guess they're giving you more of a full-body workout than a bike, which is obviously really your legs. Yeah, I'm a bit clueless, but it's good to know it works for you, thanks!

I have no experience owning or buying exercise equipment, but I've been really enamored of the idea of a treadmill desk where I could putter around online while walking, but also use the thing for running.

I'd look at used equipment and see if you can try a few things out.

I have never heard of one of those, that's an awesome idea! I wasn't thinking of anything more ambitious than watching a bit of tv while exercising, but get me on TVTropes and the hours would fly by before I knew it x) Looking at/trying out used equipment is a good idea, except I don't think there'll be anywhere local and I really don't have time right now to travel to the nearest city...
