I understand the sentiment, but I'm wondering why you switched to romance novels instead of het fic.

No kidding. Romance novels don't really deliver the same kind of thing. And frankly, they have their own set of issues regarding gender.

I think the keyword here is "crappy." OP was reading crappy slash fic, and switched over to crappy romance novels. I'd guess that they simply enjoyed reading trashy slash fic, and are now instead enjoying reading trashy romance novels. I really don't think that the point of the secret was that they somehow believe romance novels to be more progressive than slash fic.

It makes sense to me, anyways. A lot of popular modern slash fics remind me heavily of the romance novels I read in my youth.
