Crappy romance novels replaced crappy slash fic in my world once I learned to stop hating my vagina. It's strange TO realize that such a big part of my life was predicated on discomfort with my pwn sexuality.

I can relate. A lot of my interest in slash pairings used to come from my discomfort in my own sexuality. I've since worked on it and now I love my vagina, I'm happy to hear it was similar for you! :D

I still love slash, though.

Yeah, I had a couple of years where I really resented being a straight women because I feared the gender role stuff, and I only read slash and only fantasised about men having sex with men.

Now I still read lots of slash, and have m/m ships, but I read het as well and even have a few m/f ships. Still only into fanfic though, I need to know my characters before I can read sex/romantic scenes with them.

Anyway, yeah, I do wonder about that - how much my own issues with gender and self-esteem and feelings and shit play into the fic that I enjoy. On the other hand, unfortunately, even if I didn't have those issues, the kind of thing that would appeal to me basically just doesn't exist in the media, like, at, all. So I guess I'm stuck with fic for the foreseeable.

Or maybe that's fortunate, since it means I have no incentive to deal with my issues. Woooo avoidance.

Personally, I found fanfic at just the age when I was tentatively moving on from generic teen fiction to crappy romance novel.

I went the other way.

I never had an issue with my sexuality, though. But I used to read schlocky romance novels by the dozen, now I read (mostly slash) fics by the dozen (some crappy, some not) and the occasional romance novel (though usually better ones than I used to read).

And I got more comfortable with slash when I became more comfortable with my sexuality and realized it was okay to have a sexuality and that I found men together hot and that was cool too.

Of course, I still read an even mix of slash and het with quite a bit of femslash too.
