(Anonymous) 2015-06-16 03:21 am (UTC)(link)But you like slash fic? I see so much of that in any romance fic. Whether it is het, slash, or femslash. Even the gender determinism. (Of course the smaller/weaker one has to be the "girl". Why wouldn't he be? Ugh.) There are definitely good stories in each type of romance, but there are also ones filled with tropes like these. I really dislike when slash fans become all holier than thou about it.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-16 06:15 am (UTC)(link)I do think that fanfic tends to have more liberal gender roles than romance novels. Of course there is a sliding scale and I've read some pretty progressive romance novels, but they're absolutely in the minority. Publishers look for formulaic stuff. In fandom you can do whatever you want.
I see more variety in terms of kink and roles in fanfiction. I have yet to read a romance novel that does much more than light bondage and dubcon (oh, so much dubcon).
If you have any romance novels you'd like to recommend, be my guest... I like femme guys, and I can count on one hand the romance novels I've read that fulfill that criteria.
