+1, there's other reasons why I dislike most professional romance novels, not because of vagina-having reasons. I hate contrived misunderstandings, problems that would be fixed by five minutes conversation and gender determinism.

Yes so much, especially to the gender determinism. While slash often forces the characters into the same tropes (because every relationship regardless must have the same two roles, right?), at least it is easier to imagine myself in whichever position I want or just enjoy the visuals without being annoyed that at how the women are written.

Plus, frankly, I like the more porny stuff, and most romance novels aren't nearly explicit enough for my taste. And so much erotica is dubconny or outright rapy without realizing it that I've become pretty selective about what I read.

But you like slash fic? I see so much of that in any romance fic. Whether it is het, slash, or femslash. Even the gender determinism. (Of course the smaller/weaker one has to be the "girl". Why wouldn't he be? Ugh.) There are definitely good stories in each type of romance, but there are also ones filled with tropes like these. I really dislike when slash fans become all holier than thou about it.

With slash fic a lot depends on which circles you run in, though. If you associate with people with similar tastes then you can avoid cliches you don't like.

I do think that fanfic tends to have more liberal gender roles than romance novels. Of course there is a sliding scale and I've read some pretty progressive romance novels, but they're absolutely in the minority. Publishers look for formulaic stuff. In fandom you can do whatever you want.

I see more variety in terms of kink and roles in fanfiction. I have yet to read a romance novel that does much more than light bondage and dubcon (oh, so much dubcon).

If you have any romance novels you'd like to recommend, be my guest... I like femme guys, and I can count on one hand the romance novels I've read that fulfill that criteria.
