(Anonymous) 2015-06-16 06:15 am (UTC)(link)I do think that fanfic tends to have more liberal gender roles than romance novels. Of course there is a sliding scale and I've read some pretty progressive romance novels, but they're absolutely in the minority. Publishers look for formulaic stuff. In fandom you can do whatever you want.
I see more variety in terms of kink and roles in fanfiction. I have yet to read a romance novel that does much more than light bondage and dubcon (oh, so much dubcon).
If you have any romance novels you'd like to recommend, be my guest... I like femme guys, and I can count on one hand the romance novels I've read that fulfill that criteria.
