If you were a writer, you'd have to get over that pretty quick, because once your piece is out there, you can no longer control how people perceive it or what they think about the world and characters.

Also, wrt non-canon ships, not all non-canon shipping involves completely changing characters. A lot of the time, people ship a non-canon pairing because they like the dynamic between the two characters and see chemistry between them, and they'd like to see them take that further.
