"The man with facial hair gently pulled Captain America's shield free and began to loosen his uniform..."
"The black man gently pulled Captain America's shield free and began to loosen his uniform..."
"The man with chocolate skin gently pulled Captain America's shield free and began to loosen his uniform..."
"Sam gently pulled Captain America's shield free and began to loosen his uniform..."

^of the four I prefer the last one

Or how about this: "The bearded man laughed softly when the light rasp of his jaw over the smooth skin of Steve's neck caused Steve to shudder slightly and..."

I think epithets like "the bearded man" should only be used if a story is at the point where the name of the character in question isn't known yet. (Or if it's a nameless side character.) After the name is known, it should only be used very, very rarely.

Because to me, that last sentence sounds like Steve got himself into a steamy situation with some random bearded stranger.

Definitely. I roll my eyes at it in gen fic events, but when it comes up in a sex scene, unless it is literally a Tall Dark Stranger (etc) it just makes me feel like the characters stopped and froze in place to catalog each other in weird ways.

Sorry, but I’m a little irritated with your reply. As I mentioned in my first post, I’m not particularly fond of epithets myself and don’t think they should be used often, but I was giving alternatives of what someone might use if they really wanted to. I mentioned facial hair as it is a characteristic that differentiates between Sam and Steve and is part of Sam’s appearance that has nothing to do with skin color. I got a snarky reply from another anon who apparently had an issue with my mention of facial hair. I replied and said I actually prefer a name in place of the epithet, but gave them an example of an epithet which used facial hair where it might be somewhat relevant (yeah, I admit, the sentence wasn't great, but I really don't have much experience with epithets). So I kind of feel like you ignored most of what I wrote.

I didn't ignore most of what you wrote, it's just that the things you wrote don't change anything about my perception of that sentence. It wasn't anything about you personally, but using these kind of vague epithets (the 'descriptor' man) would always sound awkward in a smut scene.
