Back when I was really into Avengers fandom, I had a big obsession with Tony/Hulk fanart, even though I didn't ship them and wasn't interested in the fanfic at all.

I guess it's the feeling/idea of the King Kong/Ann Landers-type of vibe between them that I like seeing, which comes across in fanart really well. It's a sort of surreal fairy-tale sort of thing. But I'm totally uninterested in reading a story about the actual characters interacting romantically. If that makes sense?

That totally makes sense to me. I"m really into size differences myself right now, which is one reason I really like Thranduil/Thorin fanart even though I hate the pairing in writing.

Oh yeah, that makes sense - there are some pairings that are so visually arresting, even if stories about the characters don't work for you.

For me, it wasn't really the size difference as much as the monster-smitten-with-tiny-squishy-human thing that gave me warm heart cockles ;)
