What kind of meta are you looking for? Cause most of the meta is gonna be about the women as their treatment in the movie is new, different and a great talking point.

Other meta exists though.

yeah, I've definitely seen more than a few meta pieces about Max's PTSD and such.

I read a great one on Nux a couple of days ago. Don't think I reblogged it tho.

Personally, I would like a discussion about religion and what Miller is trying to say about it. On the one hand, it seems like he is putting down religion by having a self-appointed god figure that is the head of a cult being completely evil and yet, you have Dag praying to "who ever is listening."

What is he trying to say? He is for religion or at least in a belief in a god/gods but not in organized religion?

Yesss...I'm glad I'm not the only one who noticed! What does faith still mean in a world like that? Or does it become even more important? The War Boys do seem to be, insome way, a death cult, as they know they'll not grow very old.

Personally, I didn't come out of the movie thinking I was supposed to get a particular message about religion. Joe's cult didn't strike me as being a stand-in for all organized religion. Either Miller is really subtle with his message here (certainly possible) or he's not sending one and just exploring how religion might manifest itself it a post-apocalyptic society. I dunno.

I'll try! But I think yours are being a bit too general? More like:

4) each woman had her own personality/take on the world
5) varying ages
6) Furiosa's moment of stoic character in deep angst
7) varying body types/disabilities (including the poor milk women)
8) for a movie about ppl escaping rape there wasn't any rape!
9) some of the women are warriors and kicked ass in a badass way! (and those who weren't warriors helped out their way)
10) women of different ethnicities/localish cultures (neighbour cultures really but too busy being relieved at REAL Aussie / nz accents

Edit can't believe I forgot 11) didn't hook max and furiosa up!

Do you have more?

I mean, it's a story about Furiosa and the Wives. What did you expect?

op

(Anonymous) 2015-06-18 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
It is! But I don't see any meta about Furiosa or the Wives outside of how their story is framed by feminism or how feminist the characters are.

How about meta on Furiosa having to transition from the Green Place to the Citadel? Where did the wives from from? Why are they the way they are (some are way more knowledgeable about weapons than others)? How did Furiosa get in contact with them? Why did she decide to risk everything for the Wives? How did she come up with her place? Who helped her? Etc.

This is a movie I'll never look up meta for. I thought the feminist message was so strong, and I left the theater feeling so good that I don't want tumblr to ruin it by making it stupid.

I'm just tired of people who haven't watch the other movies going on, "Heh, why are they calling it Mad Max? He isn't even the central character. They should call it Furiosa."

Thing is, Max was never the central part of his films. In the last two, he was a drifter that happened to be forced into situations where he had to act. Just like Fury Road. The first one, he was barely in the first half of the movie. It's not until the second half that it becomes more about him and his family. To have a movie centered around Max and only Max would be out of character for these films.

This. (And besides, does Furiosa really get significantly more screen time? I would guess it's almost even between her and Max.)

Let's make some other meta, then

(Anonymous) 2015-06-18 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm curious about how, once the apocalypse happened, everything got to the way it was in the movie and how Joe got to his position. The thing is, I read somewhere that Miller suggested Fury Road is 40-something years post-apocalypse. That means that not only would the older Vuvalini remember the Old World, but Joe would be old enough to remember it, too. That makes him extra super creepy to me. If he'd been wholly a product of the post-apocalypse wasteland, then maybe he wouldn't bother me as much (I mean, he'd still be evil and awful, but that would just be the culture he was born into). As it is, I imagine he could have been just some young dude in Australia, maybe he had a job or something, then the apocalypse happens and he's like "I'm going to be an evil overlord now." Granted, I'm sure awful things happened to him mid- and post-apocalypse, but awful things happened to lots of people and they didn't all turn out like Joe. It's just really freaky thinking that, given the right set of circumstances, some random person next to me on the bus could become a tyrannical dictator who brainwashes boys into believing in a death cult and holds women captive to either impregnate them or pump their breast milk.

Also, clan Swaddle Dog, wtf?

Last month a Mad Max comic with Joe's back story came out. It was written by the movie writers and is considered canon.

Joe was originally Joe Moore, an army colonel when the apocalypse happened. When civilization collapsed he took his men, formed a gang and went around raiding and pillaging everything they came across. Then they came across the Citadel, which was occupied by another group. At the cost of many of his men, Joe was able to overtake the Citadel and gain control of it. He later set up his men to take over a nearby old refinery and a lead mine, which lead to the two leaders known as The Bullet Farmer and The People Eater. His legend grew from there.

lol I will never get why people are so butthurt over feminist crit of this film. What other meta would you like to talk about, OP? Have you tried actually starting those discussions?

(Anonymous) 2015-06-19 02:57 am (UTC)(link)
People who use "butthurt" lose all credibility.

There's only so much you can say about the feminist messages of the movie (which were few and very in your face and didn't really leave much for interpretation's sake, either way) and the fact that people tend to reiterate the same ten points over and over again gets really grating when the movie is a lot more than a "sexism is bad guiseee" message

...then write your own meta about the points YOU want to cover and ignore the meta you're not interested in? It's the internet, it comes with an off-switch on your end.
