Voyager fan here.

I disagree with you (no surprise), but I promise I wouldn't jump all over you for this opinion. Janeway's character could be inconsistent and her decisions sort of arbitrary, but I decided that part of that was the unorthodox crew and situation with no real Starfleet command backup or support, part of it was that she was much more experienced with the scientific research side of Starfleet than the conflict resolution side, and part of it was the absurd amount of power she had in many situations. Anyway, Voyager isn't for everyone and I think it would rank lowest, series-wise, with a fair amount of Star Trek fans (well, those that like to pretend Enterprise never existed).

Not OP but the problem with this analysis, for me, is that I just don't think it ever shows up on screen. I think it's a cool analysis, it's just not really ever done in a real, coherent way, to my eyes.

Oh, yeah, no, it doesn't really show up on screen , the writers were not great at conveying some of the issues, so I came up with my own explanation. Though there are a few little bits and bobs throughout that I think would support it, there's not a coherent, well-thought-out framework to hang it on, more's the pity.

I think it's a cool analysis - Thanks!

I agree with you. It's an awesome theory, and if that was the actual explanation, maybe I'd have been less annoyed with her character.

It was probably the writing that really sunk the show for me. It just felt like they stopped caring about "surviving with limited resources and a conflicted crew" after a while. If they'd actually kept at it, it might have been a great show. As it is, it's mediocre at best (at least in my opinion, of course).

I do think the scientific research aspect of her -- in that she often was the one providing the "technobabble ex machina" in certain storylines -- came through pretty clearly.

Other than that, her character just felt too jumbled & inconsistent much of the time; at times it felt as though she was whatever the plot needed her to be that week.
