Image: A picture of the Starship Voyager and Captain Janeway.

Text: I hated both Voyager and Captain Janeway.

The show squandered its potential, and she was a bureaucratic bore.

The only good thing I got out of watching the show was discovering SF Debris and his reviews.

(Sorry, FS Voyager fan. But that's why this is a secret.)

yeah, we finally got a woman captain and she's an incompetent cold bitch who bleats like a sheep with congestion. Think some TV writers might have issues with women in authority, just a smidge?

Wash your mouth. Seeing a woman being a starship captain at a formative age is reason enough for me to forgive Voyager whatever sins people accuse it of.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-18 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
But a competent female captain would have been so much better.

"Voyager fan"

Hey! There's more than one.

The first time I watched Voyager I was kinda "eh," though I loved Janeway. The second time I watched Voyager I was like YAY and I loved Janeway even more. It's such an awesome show if you allow yourself to have fun with it.

Voyager is stupidly popular on the Internet (or, I guess, certain very specific parts of it which include F!S).

I don't think it's awesome but, you know, to each their own.

It's so fun and stupid though? Like, I love it for the camp factor mostly. And Tom Paris...

Voyager and DS9 get better on rewatch. Enterprise managed to get worse.

"Hey! There's more than one."

Sorry, I forgot their username. I was thinking specifically of the person who has a Voyager/Janeway icon.

I'm glad you and others enjoyed it though! It really just wasn't for me, and I was baffled by its popularity, hence why I made the secret.

Chuck[SFDebris]'s Insaneway is so much more fun a character than canon-Janeway. I actually wish there were fanfic of ST:VOY with his version. Actually I wish they'd put her in the show other than Living Witness
[Heh, I like your style anon, we should eat Harry together].

(Anonymous) 2015-06-18 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
You're not the only one, OP. I refuse to accept Voyager and Enterprise as canon as far as I can possibly do so.

Voyager fan here.

I disagree with you (no surprise), but I promise I wouldn't jump all over you for this opinion. Janeway's character could be inconsistent and her decisions sort of arbitrary, but I decided that part of that was the unorthodox crew and situation with no real Starfleet command backup or support, part of it was that she was much more experienced with the scientific research side of Starfleet than the conflict resolution side, and part of it was the absurd amount of power she had in many situations. Anyway, Voyager isn't for everyone and I think it would rank lowest, series-wise, with a fair amount of Star Trek fans (well, those that like to pretend Enterprise never existed).

Not OP but the problem with this analysis, for me, is that I just don't think it ever shows up on screen. I think it's a cool analysis, it's just not really ever done in a real, coherent way, to my eyes.

Janeway doesn't come off too well if you interpret the episodes too straightforwardly. But bad writing is the best excuse for coming up with fanwank (the good kind) to explain things logically in a way that doesn't tarnish the characters.

But really, boring? She wasn't boring. Just...a little insane in the membrane.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-18 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Mulgrew herself said that around season four she started portraying Janeway as having bipolar disorder that she never got treatment for because she didn't want to show weakness to the crew. I suppose that acting choice does help with some of the less well written episodes. Explains why she let them kick her upstairs to admiral afterwards, since Janeway would never feel able to captain in the field again.

That's okay. I hate, absolutely cannot stand, DS9. I would get killed on the internet for announcing that opinion. Voyager, however, is my second favorite Star Trek series. To each his own.

It must be frustrating to still care about an old show you hated so much.

That's Trek fandom for you.

Also Who fandom.

I quite liked Voyager. It wasn't my favourite Trek, but it wasn't my least either. Oddly, I didn't have much of an opinion on Janeway? I was watching mostly for a) the Doctor, and b) Tuvok, with some love for Kes, B'Elanna, Seven and Chakotay, depending on the episode. Janeway, Paris and Kim were just sort of there, for me.
silverr: Dax looking incredulous (DS9_tribble)

Yeah, fwiw that's pretty much my ranking as well.

I disagree with you, but you are entitled to your opinions. Personally Voyager is my second favorite Trek series after DS9. And Janeway and B'Lanna are two of the big reasons for that.

That show had its problems, but I liked its female cast.

Actually, I rather like Voyager, but I was mainly watching for Tom Paris/Chakotay.
