Janeway doesn't come off too well if you interpret the episodes too straightforwardly. But bad writing is the best excuse for coming up with fanwank (the good kind) to explain things logically in a way that doesn't tarnish the characters.

But really, boring? She wasn't boring. Just...a little insane in the membrane.

Mulgrew herself said that around season four she started portraying Janeway as having bipolar disorder that she never got treatment for because she didn't want to show weakness to the crew. I suppose that acting choice does help with some of the less well written episodes. Explains why she let them kick her upstairs to admiral afterwards, since Janeway would never feel able to captain in the field again.

Man, every time I think about Voyager, I just get frustrated by the wasted potential of the series. The cast was really mostly pretty good (no power on this earth will ever lead me to call Garrett Wang a good actor), and there's a ton of potential in the subject. But the writing was just inexcusable.

Wang was alright in Year of Hell and in The Thaw. He was definitely inexperienced as an actor, but it was less that he was bad more that he never got the mentoring from the producers that he needed to grow properly. None of the actors were bad per se, although Beltran was fucking unprofessional in his badmouthing the show; he oughta have quit if it bothered him so bad instead of badmouthing it and still collecting his paycheque; and in some cases the actors really knocked out the park (Mulgrew when she got the chance, Picardo was always VFM, and MacNeill put his all into the execrable POS that was Threshold) but the writing and the direction was just so bland most of the time. There was no vision for the show. When they decided to do a Lost in Space show they oughta have sat down and planned out a serious arc, and they decided to wing it instead.
