I didn't care about it either, I was just mildly annoyed at the way they all made such a big deal out of it and you basically had to go on a wild goose chase because of it. I kept thinking "Big hole in the sky, guys, don't you all think we have something better to do?".

I got the impression that we were more supposed to care about the fact that he lied about his identity (potentially to an Inquisitor who's sleeping with him), and endangered the Inquisition's reputation. It looks really bad to get favors from people using Grey Warden treaties when you're not in any way associated with the Wardens.

See, I wouldn't say I don't care at ALL, but even though he did a bad thing, he's been atoning for it. He didn't have to, he was already free, so I give him some slack.

Granted, lying and putting the Inquisition's reputation at stake wasn't good and I can understand being upset about all that in combination, but when it comes down to it a lot of Dragon Age characters have shady as hell pasts and/or lie/use the PC in some way. I don't see how this is any worse. (And in some cases actually prefer the way it plays out.)

This is a big part of why I feel pretty indifferent about the Blackwall/Rainer case; a lot of companions have been no better. Plus, the shadier aspects of the Grand Game are present as just a thing that happens most of the time, like they’re sort of acceptable so long as you aren’t caught. It feels a little odd to condemn Rainier's actions so throughly when whoever sits on the Orlesian throat by that point in the game is probably responsible for worse, and the Inquisition just sort of collectively shrugs about it.

That's true. You can say you don't approve of the game, you can try to get a pretty straightforward outcome (I.E. not let anyone die, set anyone up, or play favorites) but there's no perfect choice. No matter what you do, the people given control have done reprehensible things as well. You can even let the Empress die, so with the ability to play the game so masterfully I find it a bit odd that some people think Blackwall is a terrible person, or beyond redemption. (Especially if they have no problem with other DA characters.)

He's no worse than most the other Dragon Age companions we've had, and he knows what he did was wrong. He might get defensive about it a few times, but all in all he's suffering because of the outcome of his actions; it weighs heavily on his mind and heart and he's trying to make up for it.

He's not my favorite but he's a decent character, and more interesting than originally expected.

Yeah, me either. And like the Inquisition hasn't killed loads of people anyway in random combat... we're all murderers, here.

I think at first I was mostly felt angry on behalf of my origins Wardens who would be really pissed off about him pretending to be a Warden and telling people what Wardens were all about without actually being one or having to go what they go through or face the consequences they face.
But really, you can have him end up becoming a Warden anyways, so it's hard to stay mad about that for too long.

I haven't played the game yet myself, but I am fond of imagining an AU where my Warden didn't go off looking for a cure and ends up help the Inquisition (she's not the Inquisitor). I don't think she would care a great deal about things that happened in Orlais a few years before, only that Rainer is pretending to be a Warden, and one that she knows by reputation once said the Wardens should abandon Ferelden to the darkspawn (Gordon Blackwall disapproved of Loghain's refusing to let Wardens into Ferelden to fight).

But I also think Elenaria would end up taking Rainer under her wing as a Warden recruit anyway. She would respect his attempt to atone.

For me, what made me consider what he did really bad is that he involved his subordinates in his murdering business by lying to them. Then they were hunted and hanged for it and he still let them take the responsibility for what he did - until the very last one. So I can't say he was atoning for it when he didn't have the courage to exonerate the people who had trusted him and were dying for it.

My first thought on that is that maybe the one he does step in on is the first he's had opportunity to hear about. In the couple of years after the original Blackwall's death he's been wandering and possibly not in touch with current news.
