Re: Favorite Comic Book and Characters
---
Outside of DC I will recommend Warren Ellis' Transmetropolitan. If you like zany cyberpunk and depictions of completely bonkers social mores (like fairly unabashed nudity, culturally acceptable body modification, and a restaurant chain that sells cloned human flesh as food) with pretty sharp political drama, all centering around a protagonist that is both lovable and completely unlikable, often at the same time, this is the comic for you. It's pretty mindbending to read during election years if you're American or British.
Another non-DC work is Irredeemable. You might've heard of DC's Injustice fighting game and the tie-in comic; in a lot of ways, tonally, the comic reminds me of Irredeemable. Basically, the Plutonian, a Superman analogue, snaps and becomes the biggest mass murderer in history, and his former not-Justice League colleagues (including not-Dr. Who) are scrambling to try and find his identity and a way to stop him. There's a sister series called Incorruptible, in which a dyed in the wool villain and long-time Plutonian enemy is witness to ground zero of Plutonian's first attack, and decides someone's gotta take his place on the good guy roster. He's bad at it, but he tries! He ends up surrounding himself with people who are qualifiably better people than himself so he has examples to draw from.
