Favorite Comic Book and Characters

(Anonymous) 2015-06-19 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)
What's your favorite comic book?

Would you recommend it to anyone or is it niche?

Who's your favorite comic book character? Why?

Going by comics books I have read (instead of comic book characters in movies), I'll have to go with Maus by Art Spiegelman.

Granted, I have not read many comics (the largest/most mainstream is The Walking Dead).

I'd recommend that everyone read it. It is pretty short so you can finish it in a day but it is very engaging. Both stories told in it are harrowing, touching, and emotional. The art work is also fantastic.

I don't really have a favorite character from it.

My second choice would be Pride of Baghdad by Brian K. Vaughan. Also a great, short read. Fantastic artwork in that story as well.

Also, I think my choices are graphic novels now that I look at the wiki pages. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Maus was fantastic. I started out thinking that the whole "mice = Jewish people, cats = Nazis" thing was a bit on the nose, but it was subtle, touching, and brilliant. What I look for in a graphic novel.

In terms of graphic novels, I also really enjoyed "The Arrival" by Shaun Tan. The art work was riveting (you could stare for days at each drawing) and the story was perfect even with a lack of dialogue.

I don't really like comics, even though I've spent far too much time reading manga and whatnot and I read various western comics during my youth.

I've variously picked up Spider Man, Batman, Venom, X-Men, Poison Elves, Johnny The Homicidal Maniac (and spinoffs), Naruto, BL stuff... and plenty of other things at one point or another and really the only two I found halfway interesting were JTHM and Naruto. But JTHM was also way too imagey and silly to really care about and Naruto went on way fucking longer than I could even bother to keep up with.

Oh well. I tried, man, I tried.

If you don't like comics then why even post in this thread? The OP was asking for favorites, not your self-absorbed whining.

I couldn't get into JTHM because it seemed too try-hard and endorsing the "everyone seemingly pleb is idiots but me" goffick trend. As an adult, finding out that Jhonen Vasquez actually wasn't intending to validate that sort of thing was hilarious to read about though. lol what a backfire

otoh, Squee was one of my favourite things during my highschool edge-lite phases. Actually, I still love the hell out of Squee.

If I had to pick one -- ONE -- DC comic to recommend, it'd be Hitman. It's a Garth Ennis joint from the late 90s (and has nothing to do with the video games) about a friendly hired killer named Tommy Monaghan living in a seedy, mostly Irish-American neighborhood in Gotham. He can see through walls and he has some mild telepathy (skills he picked up in the utterly regrettable and skippable Bloodlines event) and while it exists in the DC Universe, it sort of stands apart, mostly doing its own thing with the occasional guest spot by bigger-name characters (including a surprisingly sweet issue with Superman) and most of its big event tie-ins usually exist to make fun of the event it's tying in with. It's quite possibly the funniest DC comic I've ever read, and that includes anything Keith Giffen's ever done.

---

Outside of DC I will recommend Warren Ellis' Transmetropolitan. If you like zany cyberpunk and depictions of completely bonkers social mores (like fairly unabashed nudity, culturally acceptable body modification, and a restaurant chain that sells cloned human flesh as food) with pretty sharp political drama, all centering around a protagonist that is both lovable and completely unlikable, often at the same time, this is the comic for you. It's pretty mindbending to read during election years if you're American or British.

Another non-DC work is Irredeemable. You might've heard of DC's Injustice fighting game and the tie-in comic; in a lot of ways, tonally, the comic reminds me of Irredeemable. Basically, the Plutonian, a Superman analogue, snaps and becomes the biggest mass murderer in history, and his former not-Justice League colleagues (including not-Dr. Who) are scrambling to try and find his identity and a way to stop him. There's a sister series called Incorruptible, in which a dyed in the wool villain and long-time Plutonian enemy is witness to ground zero of Plutonian's first attack, and decides someone's gotta take his place on the good guy roster. He's bad at it, but he tries! He ends up surrounding himself with people who are qualifiably better people than himself so he has examples to draw from.

Elfquest. It seems pretty niche. My favorite characters are Redlance and Khavi. I like their designs, personalities, and the dichotomy between the two characters.

Oh my fucking god. That comic. I only ever read one issue because my bff-now-SO had a copy of it that was given to her by a well-meaning adult who had clearly never looked at the thing.

All I can remember was that it had a really creepy tentacle vore thing where there was a ridiculously sexualized few pages of a female elf being eaten by a monster.

+1!

Even though Elfquest is pretty niche, I wholeheartedly recommend it. It's still one of the most open-minded comics I've ever read.

My favourite character is definitely Strongbow. I love how he noticeably changes trough-out the story, while the essence of his personality remains the same.

1. Probably the X-Men First Class series

2. You don't really need to have prior knowledge about the X-Men to understand it (it takes place in the early days when Xavier first opened his school) and it's really cute/fun, so I'd recommend it. It also has great characterization for Scott, who unfortunately gets screwed over a lot and is only written well like 5% of the time, so that's nice.

3. From this specific comic book title? Probably Scott. I love that First Class shows us a lot of his vulnerable and occasionally playful/goofy side. In general though, my favorite character is probably Bobby Drake (who is in First Class, but I thought Scott shone a bit brighter)

I love CrossGen comics but it's difficult to narrow it down to one. They're all so different and it really depends upon my mood which on I like best. Meridian or Mystic might be my favorite worlds. Sigil has my favorite character. Route 666 sucked me in (and I don't even like horror). Ruse might be my favorite but it really does depend.

They really are very niche.

For a favorite character, I really like Danik. He's pretty much all powerful. He's calculating and willing to do whatever he needs to do to protect the universe. But he's also taking care of all the sigil!bearers, and learning to care again. My favorite avatar of his is definitely JeMerik.

Nextwave!

YES. Absolutely, I would recommend it to anyone.

In Nextwave? Elsa Bloodstone, I think she's hilarious. In general? Wally West, because I grew up on the cartoon series, and my love for him transferred over.

Ooh, I also love + would recommend Global Frequency. I just wish we had more. :(

Man, I don't know if I could pick just one since I have a lot I like but Hellboy: Right hand of Doom and Wonder Woman: Eyes of the Gorgon are two particular favourites of mine.

Overall favourite character though? I dunno, it's a toss up between Scarlet Witch and Wonder Woman I think.

Favourite book at the moment is Sex Criminals, and I recommend it to everyone with a sense of humour. It's about a librarian who discovered as a kid that orgasms caused time to stop around her. It wasn't until she started hooking up with folk later in life that she realised this doesn't happen to anyone else. That is, until she sleeps with a guy who comes with her into this time stop. So what do they do besides fall in love? They decide to rob a bank.

I also have a huge soft spot for Roman Dirge's Lenore. They're very absurd and cute comics more akin to Courage the Cowardly Dog mixed in with some Addam's Family that tends toward dark humour that you don't have to feel like an ironic social outcast to enjoy.

Favourite comic character is a tough one. The first one that comes to mind is Guy Gardner because he's just so fun (JLI is impressionable ♥), maybe a kind of wish fulfillment too, and I love how Peter Tomasi writes him in GL Corp. He's not just some crazy lantern either, he's got this rough blunt moral compass too.

But Annie in Gunnerkrig Court is one of the best characters for me because she was a slow burn of development. Here's this stoic no-nonsense schoolgirl in some kind of steampunk Hogwarts, and let's unravel her defensive guards and wring some emotional shit out of her ♥

I'm kind of digging Harley Quinn's ongoing too right now, so there's that.

Courtney Crumin, both character and comics. I have a thing for the fae, and Courtney's just grumpy and vicious and optimistic enough that I love her. You can see so clearly that she's only ten. Also, Tommy Rawhead and Bloodybones was pretty awesome too, and Courtney's uncle Aloysius was badass even if I'm not sure if I actually like him.

With DC comics, I think the Martian Manhunter will always be my favourite. For specific books, I loved his storyline with King Faraday in DC: The New Frontier, and I remember liking him a fair bit in Grant Morrison's run on JLA as well (in Rock of Ages, I think the worst part for me was his fate in the dystopic future). I also love Alfred Pennyworth, and always will.

I think I read more webcomics than print comics these days though. Mostly for budget reasons.

Not sure about my absolute favorite (And I haven't read as many as I would like), but Gotham Central was stellar. Other than that... Probably gonna go with The Authority and Birds of Prey.

And of course the most recent Hawkeye run and Rat Queens are both great, fun reads that don't require prior knowledge. I'd recommend those.

And, yes, I would love for people to read it.

My favorite is probably Maggie. There is something about her that just makes me want to be sure that she is safe.

Are we counting ALL comics, including manga, webcomics, newspaper comics, etc.?

If so, my favourite comic ever is definitely Calvin and Hobbes. And yes, I would recommend to to anyone and everyone.

If we're not counting newspaper comics, I'd have to say Justice League International. I'd recommend that to anyone who A) likes superheroes, and B) doesn't take the superhero genre too seriously.

As for my favourite character? Batman, no competition. There's just so much you can do with him. There are countless ways to interpret him, and he fits into so many different roles. There's campy Adam West Batman, grim-'n'-gritty Frank Miller Batman, Batman the vigilante, Batman the detective, Batman the kung-fu action movie hero, Batman the tragic brooding hero, Batman the morally questionable anti-hero, Superman's BFF Batman, Batman the father figure to multiple Robins and at least one Batgirl, Bruce Wayne the billionaire playboy, etc. Think of any comic book scenario, there's a way you can work Batman into it. Because he's a character that can fill so many roles, he can be inserted seamlessly into pretty much any kind of story - that's why so many Elseworlds are about him, and it's a big part of why he's so popular and iconic. And that's why I love him.

The Kelly Sue DeConnick / David Lopez Captain Marvel is really good. I pity anyone trying to collect the back issues, because I think they're on their third #1 (and the third series is a weird AU like over half of Marvel's output right now).

Of course, for all time and counting manga, it's way down the list.

I've always been very fond of Black Canary and the other Birds of Prey. I just really love them. I love that it's a series based around women working together and helping each other and kicking bad guy ass.

The Batman Adventures series (a tie-in comic to Batman: the Animated Series that actually outlasted the show and ran until 2004) was positively excellent. There were a couple of low points, sure, but it ran for twelve years so not everything was bound to be great (even then though, I think the bad issues often weren't so much as bad as they were just less good than the others). The characterization was great and I think it captured everything that's good about Batman as a hero and the villains also had some great storylines (the issue where Scarecrow returns to his life as a professor and genuinely seems to have reformed only to eventually fall off the wagon when he can't help but torture the man who date raped his favorite student was a bit heartbreaking for instance). It also managed to have serious storylines without falling into the trap of making things overly dark and gritty to the point of ridiculousness, which is something that a lot of Batman writers have trouble with
